Safeguarding

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. Safeguarding is one of our most important tasks, as we care for the young children who attend our infant school. Safeguarding is considered to be a ‘golden thread’, running through our every policy and interaction, as we foster good mental and physical health in our pupils and ensure they feel safe, happy and confident in school.

Our  Safeguarding Policy is updated annually, approved by the Governors and read by all staff, along with Keeping Children Safe in Education and our Staff Behaviour and Code of Conduct .  All staff undertake safeguarding training once a year and on joining our school.

On entering the school, all staff and visitors are asked to read our safeguarding notice, shown below. If you become concerned about the welfare of a child in school, please contact the School's Designated Safeguarding Lead, Mrs Sam Dudley, and in her absence the Deputy Officer, Mrs Stacey Clarke, Mrs Cara Dean, Mr Dan Browning or Mrs Claire Clark. Alternatively our Governor responsible for safeguarding is Mrs Becky Perry, whose contact details can be obtained from the school office.

All parent helpers have to attend safeguarding training before they are able to come in to help.  They are also required to have an enhanced DBS with the school or be on the DBS update service.  The slides from this training can be seen below.

Prevent Duty

As part of West Byfleet Infant School's ongoing safeguarding and child protection duties we are fully behind the government’s Prevent Strategy.

All schools are subject to a duty under section 26 of the Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015, in the exercise of their functions, to have “due regard to the need to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism”. This duty is known as the Prevent Duty for Schools.

At West Byfleet Infant School, we build pupils’ resilience to radicalisation by promoting fundamental British values and enabling our pupils to challenge extremist views.

General safeguarding principles apply to keeping children safe from the risk of radicalisation as set out in the relevant statutory guidance, our Safeguarding Policy and Keeping Children Safe in Education, which all staff at school have read and understood. In line with the statutory guidance, which refers to the importance of Prevent awareness training to equip staff to identify children at risk of being drawn into terrorism and to challenge extremist ideas, they have also undertaken the online general awareness training module on Channel. This is a programme which focuses on providing support at an early stage to people who are identified as being vulnerable to being drawn into terrorism. It provides a mechanism for schools to make referrals if they are concerned that an individual might be vulnerable to radicalisation. An individual’s engagement with the programme is entirely voluntary at all stages.
