English as an Additional Language (EAL)

West Byfleet Infant School is proud of our diversity and we currently welcome families from over 15 countries with over 20 different languages.

Many in our community speak English as a second language so we have developed a very skilled team to provide support to these families and children. We have staff with specific skills and experience in speech and language, some are also qualified in the use of Makaton.

Our experienced Inclusion Team support and work with our families to ensure they have everything in place to succeed. This includes small group and one-to-one sessions using the Racing to English programme, support in class, family support meetings and translation for school communications with internal or external staff.

We also have a range of languages spoken within our staff team or we seek support from the Surrey agency REMA (Race, Equality, Minority Achievement)  so there is someone available to translate communication.
