  • SMSC

SMSC stands for SpiritualMoralSocial, and Cultural development, which refers to the broader personal development of children and young people.

At WBIS, SMSC development is woven throughout the curriculum and daily life, helping to nurture well-rounded, thoughtful, and respectful young citizens. Children are encouraged to reflect on their feelings and beliefs, explore the world around them with wonder, and develop a strong sense of right and wrong.

Through storytelling, assemblies, and class discussions, we support pupils in understanding and managing emotions, forming positive relationships, and appreciating the views of others. These foundations promote empathy, kindness, and respect from the earliest years of school life.

Our approach to SMSC is closely aligned with the teaching of British values: democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. We create opportunities for even our youngest children to experience these values in meaningful ways—such as voting for class choices, understanding classroom rules, celebrating different cultures and traditions, and learning to express their views respectfully.

Through this, pupils begin to understand their role in the school community and wider society, developing the confidence and character to become respectful, responsible citizens.
