Curriculum Overview

Curriculum

The Reception year is a vital part of your child’s educational journey – it’s where the foundations for lifelong learning are laid. Just like building a house, these early skills need to be strong and secure to support everything that follows.

At West Byfleet Infant School, we offer an exciting and engaging curriculum designed to spark curiosity and inspire confidence. Through a balance of adult-led and child-initiated activities, our children are encouraged to be resourceful, inquisitive, and communicative learners who aren’t afraid to ‘have a go’ and rise to new challenges.

A smooth and happy transition into school life is one of our key priorities. We work closely with families and local nursery settings to ensure every child feels safe, supported, and ready to enjoy their learning journey. Together, we nurture a love of learning that will stay with them for years to come.

Prime Areas

Communication and Language
Personal, Social and Emotional Development
Physical Development

Specific Areas

Literacy
Maths
Understanding the World
Expressive Arts and Design

We plan experiences and activities that allow children to explore and extend their understanding in a stimulating indoor and outdoor environment. We use daily observations to inform further opportunities and enhance learning zones to encourage high levels of engagement and progress in learning skills.

In Reception we focus on developing the 'whole child' and ensure that all areas of learning are explored and developed with a skills based approach.

These areas are all important and the guide below shows some of the aspects we look for in Reception.
