Prevent

As part of West Byfleet Infant School's commitment to safeguarding and child protection we fully support the Government's Prevent Strategy, and take guidance from Teaching Approaches to help build resilience to extremism.

What is the Prevent Strategy?

The Prevent strategy is a government strategy designed to stop people becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism. It:

  • responds to the ideological challenge we face from terrorism and aspects of extremism, and the threat we face from those who promote these views

  • provides practical help to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism and ensure they are given appropriate advice and support

  • works with a wide range of sectors (including education, criminal justice, faith, charities, online and health)

Fundamental British Values

Prevent duty and fundamental British Values work synonymously together, as they both send the same messages that are intended to deter young people from becoming victims of radicalisation and extremism in Britain.

At West Byfleet Infant School we teach British values within Learning for Life and RE, as well as across the wider curriculum, to encourage children to have tolerance for different belief systems.

By teaching British values we seek to combine the elements of safeguarding, prevent duty, and British values together.

How do we embed the British Values in school life?

Democracy

Eco Team and School Council representatives are elected each year by their fellow pupils. The School Council and Eco Team meets regularly to discuss issues and suggest improvements. The teams represent their classes, organise events, and act as role models. An annual questionnaire allows all pupils to put forward their views about the school. Democracy is also promoted through additional PSHE lessons and assemblies.

The Rule of Law

Pupils are taught from an early age the rules of the school and the importance of laws that govern the class, the school, and the country. We have high expectations of how pupils should conduct themselves, as reflected in our Behaviour Policy.

Individual Liberty

Pupils are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing they are in a safe and supportive environment. We teach children how to keep themselves safe, with great emphasis placed on the digital environment through e-safety and PSHE lessons.

Mutual Respect

Our ethos and behaviour policy are rooted in our core values. Children learn that their behaviour affects their own rights, as well as those of others. All members of the school community 'treat each other and they would wish to be treated' which is our Golden Rule. Children are taught to respect one another and to be cooperative and collaborative in learning and play.

Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs

We actively promote cultural diversity and develop an openness towards other faiths across the globe. Religious Education and PSHE lessons reinforce messages of tolerance and respect for others, fostering an appreciation of different cultures and beliefs.

At West Byfleet Infant School, we strive to create a learning environment where these British values shape every aspect of school life, preparing our pupils to live as respectful, responsible, and engaged citizens in a diverse world.
