Welcome to Reception at West Byfleet Infant School

'We Belong, Inspire, Succeed'

Starting school is a big and exciting step, and at West Byfleet Infant School, we are dedicated to making this journey a joyful and inspiring experience for every child. Our Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides a safe, nurturing, and stimulating environment where children can thrive, explore, and develop a lifelong love of learning.

What Does Learning Look Like in Reception?

Reception is part of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), which focuses on developing the “whole child.” This means we nurture not only academic skills but also social, emotional, and physical development.

The curriculum is divided into seven areas of learning, grouped into Prime Areas and Specific Areas:

Prime Areas – Building Strong Foundations
  1. Communication and Language

    • Developing listening, understanding, and speaking skills.
    • Encouraging conversations, storytelling, and asking questions.
  2. Personal, Social and Emotional Development

    • Learning to share, take turns, and build friendships.
    • Developing confidence and resilience.
  3. Physical Development

    • Improving coordination and movement through play and activities.
    • Learning about healthy choices and self-care.
Specific Areas – Expanding Knowledge and Skills
  1. Literacy

    • Learning letters and sounds (phonics).
    • Beginning to read and write simple words and sentences.
  2. Mathematics

    • Exploring numbers, counting, shapes, and patterns.
    • Using practical activities to understand concepts.
  3. Understanding the World

    • Discovering nature, technology, and different cultures.
    • Asking questions about how things work.
  4. Expressive Arts and Design

    • Painting, music, role play, and creative projects.
    • Encouraging imagination and self-expression.
How Do Children Learn?
  • Play-based learning: Children learn best through play, exploration, and hands-on experiences.
  • Adult-led activities: Teachers guide learning through focused tasks and small group work.
  • Child-initiated activities: Children choose activities that interest them, fostering independence and curiosity.

We use daily observations to understand each child’s progress and plan next steps. Our classrooms and outdoor spaces are designed to inspire creativity and problem-solving.

  • Individual Support for Every Child
Every child is unique. We take time to understand their interests, strengths, and needs, tailoring our approach so they can thrive and feel proud of their achievements.
